Supercooled Water (Instant Ice) and Invisible Water!

I didn’t know there was a such thing as liquid water under 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but there is, it is called supercooled water, and something really cool happens when you disturb it!

Basically, water needs some sort of “seed” (some impurity like an air bubble) to start crystallization, and if there isn’t then it won’t crystallize, which means it stays in liquid form. For a more formal description, visit Wikipedia’s Article on it.

So what happens when you add that extra “seed” to crystallize it when it is below freezing? (Almost) Instant freezing! Watch the following video!

Cool eh? I’m planning to try it myself, and I’ll tell you how it goes!

So, obviously water can’t be invisible, but what about something that acts like water but is invisible? How about a denser than air, non-toxic, non-flammable, odorless, colorless gas called sulfur hexafluoride (to Wikipedia). Check it out the “magic” (which is actually just good old science) in action in the video below! The only bad thing about it is that the gas contributes to global warming and when released will stay in the atmosphere for about 3,200 years.

I probably won’t get to experience this myself, but just watching it on Youtube still is amazing.

Tell me what you think about these two “magical” scientific tricks!
